Since 1995, Jebsen Group has supported Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s (HKUST) Scholarship via the Jebsen Education Fund. The Group founded the “Michael Jebsen Professorship in Business” in 2013 and the “David von Hansemann Professorship of Science” in 2015, and recently the professorship’s recipients gave an update of their academic research achievements to the Group.

In 2017, Professor James Y.L. Thong of HKUST’s School of Business and Management (SBM) received the “Michael Jebsen Professorship of Business”, while Professor Pei-Yuan Qian of HKUST’s Division of Life Science was granted the “David von Hansemann Professorship of Science”. Both have contributed outstanding and impactful academic research over the subsequent years.

As Chair Professor of the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management (ISOM) of SBM, Professor James Y.L. Thong has had two papers accepted for publishing by well-known academic journals – the Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS) and Information Systems Journals (ISJ).

Earlier this year, Professor Thong was named as one of the ‘Top 2% of Scientists in the World’ in a study led by Stanford University, and ranked 63rd (all citations) out of a faculty of 16,581 in the field of Information Systems. This recognition testifies to Professor Thong’s academic influence worldwide and his outstanding contribution to the development of his profession.

Professor Pei-yuan Qian serves as Chair Professor of the Division of Life Science. Last year, Professor Qian made several exciting discoveries regarding the molecular mechanisms of biological adaptation in deep-sea and ocean trench marine animals. These include decoding a rare and bizarre deep-sea snail genome and unveiling the ancient origins of biomineralized armour.

In recent years, Professor Qian has led his team to establish HKUST’s Department of Ocean Science, serving as Department Head. He also serves as the Deputy Director of the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Labortory (Guangzhou) and Director of its Hong Kong branch. While devoting himself to academic research and teaching, Professor Qian also supports the national programmes of China’s Bureau of Ocean Affairs.

The “Michael Jebsen Professorship of Business” commemorates former Jebsen Group Chairman, Mr Michael Jebsen VI, while the “David von Hansemann Professorship of Science” was created in honour of former Group Director, Mr David von Hansemann. The partnership with HKUST cemented by these named professorships will provide resources for academics to further their excellence.

Jebsen Group has always been supportive of the education sector and the next generation’s academic development. Group Chairman Mr Hans Michael Jebsen has been a long-time supporter of the University, providing an annual scholarship in perpetuity for HKUST students since 1995. Mr Jebsen became an Honorary Fellow of HKUST in 2000 and has served on the University’s Business School Advisory Council since 2011. In September 2017, he was appointed as its Chairman.

HKUST express their tremendous appreciation for Jebsen Group’s long-term commitment to promoting educational development, enabling the university to uphold its remarkable tradition of academic and research excellence.
